High-speed scanning in human memory.

When subjects judge whether a test symbol is contained in a short memorized sequence of symbols, their mean reaction-time increases linearly with the length of the sequence. The linearity and slope of the function imply the existence of an internal serial-comparison process whose average rate is between 25 and 30 symbols per second.

High-speed, two-photon scanning microscope.

We have developed a high-speed two-photon microscope with submicrometer resolution in real time. The imaging speed improvement of this system is obtained by the use of a high-speed polygonal mirror scanner. The maximum achievable scanning rate is 40 micros/line, which is approximately 100 times faster than conventional scanning microscopes. High-resolution fluorescence images were recorded in r...

Optimal Design of High Speed Mechanical Systems

The trend towards higher performance mechanical systems has naturally led to the need to design such systems in an optimal fashion. Lighter components and higher operating speeds both demand a level of design a step above that provided conventionally. This paper describes a research effort aimed at developing the methodology for such system design. The methodology is based on accurate computer ...

Heuristically optimal path scanning for high-speed multiphoton circuit imaging.

Population dynamics of patterned neuronal firing are fundamental to information processing in the brain. Multiphoton microscopy in combination with calcium indicator dyes allows circuit dynamics to be imaged with single-neuron resolution. However, the temporal resolution of fluorescent measures is constrained by the imaging frequency imposed by standard raster scanning techniques. As a result, ...
